We had made plans to go for a hike this Saturday with Smita. Saturday morning, however, greeted us with fog and rain. It wasn't enough to keep us at home. So, after a late start to the morning we headed to Sandhya and Someet's place to pick up Smita. Sandhya fed us a scrumptious brunch of idlis, chutney sandwiches, dahi vada, and cake. Really, it was a recipe for sloth. After eating, we lazed around until 2PM while sporadic showers continued outside.
After sipping on warm cups of chai, the three of us headed to Monocacy Aqueduct. It wasn't hiking weather, but I wanted to go see it. As we got closer to the aqueduct, the clouds descended, and driving through the deserted, narrow road lined with leafless trees, it seemed like we were driving into the makings of a horror movie. The road rose and dipped ever so slightly, and the steamy fog wove its way through the bare branches.
At the aqueduct, the fog remained. We parked and explored. The Monocacy river seemed so still, and the aqueduct made a perfect reflection in its waters. We started to make our way away from the aqueduct, along the river. As the water opened up, a thick elongated cloud hovered above the water, exaggerating the stillness.
The trail soon ended with some fallen trees. We doubled back to the aqueduct, ascended its lofty steps and walked its length. The fog now, even thicker, swallowed people a few dozen yards away. All we needed was thematic music, and there would have been no question of this being a movie set.
As the day started to close, we piled back into the car and headed for some delicious Thai food, a perfect antidote to our wet, cold feet.
