Ice Storm 2016 in Eugene

On Wednesday it rained. It was the cold, freezing kind of rain. Which meant, icicles! Lots and lots of them! We have seen ice storms in DC. We have seen icicles in DC. But, we have not seen these many icicles, and they definitely did not last 5 days!

Every morning, I woke up in utter wonder, that the trees outside our windows still bore these beautiful icicles! I know in Eugene we won't get the blizzards and the snow we did in DC. But, for the prettiness of the ice for these few days will take me through a lot of the winter. Ice storms aren't usual here - it's been decades since Eugene has had one like this. Maybe it was a Welcome to Eugene winter gift to me?

Living in downtown, and living in an apartment, brought with it huge benefits. We didn't lose power. Tree limbs didn't come crashing down on our home. We got the beauty without any of the negative. More and more, as time passes, I become less convinced to want to live in or own a house.

Wednesday - I left work and enjoyed myself on my way home!

Thursday, surprised that the ice was still around, we took our cameras out and went romping.

Friday, we headed up to our terrace, because it seemed like Eugene had been transformed to Narnia.

Saturday, sun!

On Saturday, the sun came out, and look what it did with the ice
Sunday, we had to go for a walk. Get out of the house. We walked to the river.

Saturday's sun didn't do much to melt the ice. Sunday, these fences remain frozen.

First Snow of the Year!

Finally snow! And, so pretty! We walked out of Pansaari and were treated with a white DC.

But, in preparation of the blizzard coming this weekend, they didn't salt the roads! It was a complete mess! So many accidents, it was crazy. The uber home had to reroute so many times because of road conditions (slipping) and traffic. Eventually, when we were close enough we just got off and walked home, and told the driver to head home safely.

Once near home, the cathedral was lit up almost in a welcome home :)

We did try to go to CVS to get milk, but we were kidding ourselves. I mean after a washout at the Dupont Whole Foods and Giant, what did we expect? Ah, DC!

Raindrops on my Umbrella

Sometimes...okay, many times, the rain is annoying with the wetness and cold it brings. But, sometimes, when you stand under your umbrella, waiting for your bus, the gentle pitter patter of the raindrops on the umbrella can be the most peaceful sound.

In every annoyance, there is happyness.

Peak Bloom! :)

Saurabh and I met after work and headed to the Tidal Basin. The Cherry Blossoms are finally in full bloom. With the high being 90 today, it was a warm day out, to say the least. But, the light breeze at the basin made for perfect weather. We walked around, took photos and then lazed on the grass enjoying the breeze, the view and the blossom visitors. I am always so happy to see the Cherry Blossoms in full bloom. :)

Hurricane Sandy Days

Sandy, the superstorm, caused unprecedented damage in New York and New Jersey and a lot of other North Eastern states. DC was spared. We got a lot of wind and rain, but not much damage. We were lucky.

But, before Sandy hit, Aditi and the kids came to spend the storm days with us since Somik was traveling on mission. It was fun spending 2 days with them in our apartment. We played and entertained and cooked and talked. I didn't go to work on Monday (Oct 29, 2012), but I had to. I did go to work on Tuesday, but late

We were able to get our laundry done that weekend and Aru and Rey were just so ridiculously enthralled by it. They were just the best helpers ever. They wanted to do everything! :)

Stormy DC!!!!!

DC has been having insane storms this summer. It has definitely been my stormiest summer ever! Typically we have 1-2 storms all summer, but we seem to be having one a week, if not more. People are continuously losing power, trees are falling, debris is all over the roads and pavements! I have seen some of the prettiest lightening streaks across the sky! The winds are insane! with trees swaying mightily. During one of the storms, the trees were so far bent, they were nearly touching the ground. I think last evening, the thunder was SO loud that it set off someone's car alarm at work. We were standing near the door watching the storm and we heard the alarm go off! Global warming is here with every possible sign it can administer!

Wind, Debris, Storm and Shelter

After lunch, Sapna dropped us off near the National Air and Space Museum. We were waiting for a bus when we noticed the storm clouds heading our way. Then, this insane gust of wind and debris began and we had to stand backing it as it all came hurtling towards us. After that calmed down a bit, the rain came, slowly at first so we took shelter right outside the museum. Soon, the guards from inside summoned everyone in and once in we heard an announcement saying the building was now a shelter for the storm coming and everyone should move away from glass walls. It was mighty crowded inside. It felt kinda cool to be in a shelter. Hehe!

The silly storm made us miss our movie! We were going to go for Despicable Me. Oh well...!

Apparently, because of this storm there were power cuts all across the DC area leaving 28,000 people without power!!!!

There was debris all over DC!!

Sheltering at the Air and Space Museum

The crowd in was insane! A lot due to DC being filled with Scouts this weekend, I think

DC is melting!!!!

Today is the second day with soaring mercury! At midnight last night it was 89F!!! Today, my ice cream started melting so fast the moment I stepped out that I had to gobble it down. Five minutes later I had forgotten that I had eaten an ice cream.

Walking outside, it felt like I was in Muscat with almost NO ONE on the roads. DC is just going through insane weather this year! 5 months back we had 2 blizzards and now we have record breaking temps for the area

One Stormy Night...

This photo was taken at 11:30PM. Even though it looks like daylight, it is in fact lightning that makes it appear so.

...nothing really happened. But it sure was gorgeous out there! I was lying in bed, looking out of the window and it was gorgeous to see the cathedral with lightning and hearing the thunder. I love my apartment! I love storms when I am inside, warm, dry and snug! :)

I looked out of my window...

...and there was crrrrazyyyyy lightning and a crazy downpour! I love it when I am sitting indoors! So so so beautiful!

It's windyyyy out there

Today is an incredibly windy day. Good thing the temperatures are high. According to weather.com what the temperature is and what it feels like is EXACTLY the same. The fact that the wind won't do the same thing in sub zero tempertures just shows us that in winter, everything is out to get us!
